My Story

The Long Story, Short

Hi!  I'm Shannon, and I’ve been an athlete for as long as I can remember.

The Long Story, Long

Starting at age three, I played soccer on an all-boys team. Later, I ran track, and through the years played soccer at the Olympic Development, NCAA Division I, and professional levels. I’ve always been active and healthy and it was a big part of my identity.

After being sidelined with a serious leg injury, I took the same intensity and drive I had on the soccer field into the corporate world, working my way up through several companies in New York City. By 2014, with a big promotion under my belt, I traveled the U.S. and the world as the Global Sales Director for a luxury home decór and gift brand. It was a dream job, but it came with very high demands on my time and energy. By the end of that year I found myself inexplicably sick and in constant pain, unable to participate in many of my favorite activities like tennis and running. Even walking up the subway stairs in NYC was an enormous challenge, leaving me sweaty and my legs shaking by the time I got to the top!

The Long Story, Longer

I spent the next three years trying to figure out what was wrong with me, eventually getting a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, severe vitamin deficiencies, and a dairy intolerance (a nightmare for a Wisconsin cheesehead such as myself). This helped explain the bewildering lack of energy, constant nausea and sickness, mystery ailments, and severe body-wide muscle pain and spasms I had endured for those three years.

During that time, I spent many late-night hours in bed with my computer, searching for answers. When I finally found them, through research and the help of my doctor, it was a huge relief. Over the course of the next year I was able to get my health back on track, mainly through diet, exercise, practicing mindfulness, and effective high-dose supplement therapy.

Wrapping Up

The experience of suddenly going from healthy to unhealthy, of running a personal best in a half marathon one month and then not being able to get out of bed the next, was humbling to say the least. But it ignited an interest in improving not just my own health and wellness, but also that of others. So I decided to earn a nutrition coaching certification through Precision Nutrition, the leading nutrition coaching company in the world. I also got a personal training certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), and became a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) through the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the certifying agency for doctors and other health professionals.
